5 Things

From Gideon Barker, founder of Customer IQ

Hi reader

Well, whatever your views are of the world, it’s definitely been an interesting week!

We’ve also smashed through Blue Monday (pah!) and we’re only 200 hours away from Feb. That might be comforting for anyone following Dry January (or, are you tempted to keep going? If so you may be interested in my alcohol-free blog at weareafaf.com).

Pulling together another broad selection of things for you this week:

Time to scrap the marketing funnel?

Instead, maybe look to build your brand’s ‘mass’ and ‘digital gravity’. Interesting concept and conversation between Greg Isenberg and Cody Schneider on the Startup Ideas Podcast (find it on Spotify).

10 startups, 1 year

I love this idea. If you ever wanted to know what it’s really like to build a startup (ie. not what you read on LinkedIn) then this is for you. A behind the scenes look at 10 super exciting businesses, each followed for 12 months. I am imagining some amazing content to come.

Is research a cost or an investment?

An investment should have an ROI, but it’s very hard to prove that with research - often the impact is less tangible to see. I would still argue research is very much a vital investment when building a business. Got an opinion? Let me know.

Has Musk been snubbed by Stargate?

Perhaps a signal of some turbulent times ahead, Elon Musk has publicly criticised the ‘Stargate’ $500bn investment into AI in the US. He suggested of the project - funded by Softbank, Oracle and OpenAI - “They don’t actually have the money”

The difference between branding and marketing?

Just ask Will Poskett. I saw his post last week and loved the articulation of brand vs marketing. Startups not starting early enough on brand building is a big bugbear of mine. Will’s post has some useful advice on how to do this too.
